How To Check Your Name In The Voter List Online — 2026 Guide

The Election Commission of India's Electoral Roll is a living document. Names are added, names are deleted, addresses are updated, errors are introduced. The system designed to find your name fast does not exist, so a small share of legitimate voters discover on polling day that they cannot vote. Five minutes online today prevents that.

Step 1 — Open the right tool

The official Election Commission portal is electoralsearch.eci.gov.in. The National Voters' Service Portal (NVSP) at nvsp.in also works, but routes through the same database. Avoid any third-party site that asks for OTP or payment — voter-list lookup is free and requires no OTP.

Step 2 — Pick a search mode

The portal offers three search modes. (a) Search by Details — your name, your father's/husband's name, your date of birth or age, gender, state, district, assembly constituency. (b) Search by EPIC — your Voter ID card number (10-character alphanumeric printed on the card itself). (c) Search by Mobile — only works if your mobile is linked to your voter record, which most voters' aren't.

Step 3 — The fastest mode

Search by EPIC if you have your voter ID. It returns instantly, no ambiguity. Search by Details if you don't have the EPIC handy. Avoid Search by Mobile unless you know your mobile is linked.

Step 4 — Verify what comes back

If your name appears, three details to confirm: spelling exactly matches your ID documents, your assembly constituency is the one where you actually live, and your polling booth number is shown. Note the polling booth number — it tells you where to physically vote on polling day.

Step 5 — If your name is missing

Two paths. (a) Form 6 — for new voter registration. Fill on voterportal.eci.gov.in. Requires age proof, address proof, and one photo. (b) Form 7 — to object to deletion if you believe your name was wrongly removed. Use this if you previously voted from this address but are now missing.

Step 6 — If your details are wrong

Form 8 corrects any details: name spelling, address, photo, anything. Same portal. Processing takes 7–30 days depending on state.

Last-revision schedule matters

The electoral roll is revised periodically by the ECI. The Summary Revision typically happens in November-December each year. Continuous updation is allowed throughout the year except in the immediate run-up to an election. Apply early — applications filed during the election period are sometimes held back.

What to do if you arrive at the booth and your name is missing

Ask the Booth Level Officer (BLO) to check the supplementary list. Ask the Polling Officer to check the marked copy of the roll. If your name is in the supplementary list, you can vote. If you have a valid EPIC but your name is not in any list, contact the District Election Officer in writing — this becomes evidence in any post-election dispute.

Why this matters

Systematic deletion of legitimate voters is the single most important electoral integrity issue in India, and it's almost entirely solvable by individual voters checking the rolls before polling day. Five minutes now. No queue, no surprise.
